Founded in 1869 on the third floor of a downtown department store building, Cleveland Public Library has grown into an institution with a national reputation over more than 150 years. The Library serves as a reflection of both the City’s past and its future with each department holding a piece of Cleveland’s history, from early maps of the Western Reserve to annual reports of global businesses headquartered in the city.

This exhibit highlights materials from the subject departments located in the Louis Stokes Wing that paint a picture of the story of Downtown Cleveland.

When visiting the Louis Stokes Wing, you will find unique collections on the third through the sixth floors. The departments on these floors carefully acquire materials to help Cleveland residents and others in learning more about the things that interest them.

The Library’s collections are so deep and rich that staff members routinely work with researchers from around the globe; but, at the heart of its mission, the Cleveland Public Library strives to be the center of lifelong learning for the City of Cleveland.
